Part 1 is a theory test which lasts around 1 hour and 45 minutes. The test includes:
- 100 multiple choice questions
- a hazard perception test
To pass the test both parts must be passed at the same time. Some of you may remember taking your theory test when you were learning to drive for the first time, and this test is not unlike that. Of the 100 questions that you'll be asked on the multiple choice part of the test, you will be asked 25 questions from four different sections:
- road procedure
- traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge
- driving test, disabilities, and the law
- publications and instructional techniques
To pass the multiple question part of the test you must get a minimum of 85 questions correct and at least 20 of the 25 questions in each section. The hazard perception part of the test involves being shown 14 different video clips that feature everyday road scenes. There will be:
- 1 developing hazard in 13 of the clips
- 2 developing hazards in 1 of the clips
The definition of a developing hazard is "something that may cause you to take some action, such as changing speed or direction." Each clip carries a maximum of 5 points, which you will score if spotting the hazard at the earliest point, down to 0 points if you don't spot the hazard or spot it very late. Please be aware that you can also score 0 points on a clip if you continuously click the mouse button. To pass the hazard perception test you must score at least 57 points out of a maximum of 75.
There is no limit to the amount of times you can attempt Part 1, but once passed you have up to 2 years to pass Part 2 and Part 3 before you would need to take Part 1 again.
How will we train you?
Part 1 will be the least taxing part of becoming a driving instructor. Much of the study for this part of the qualifying process will be done at home, learning from various recommended books and CD ROMS. You will of course have access to our online learning centre as well as having phone support from Jody whenever needed. If you run in to any problems whilst studying for this part of the test then we will be on hand to guide you to your theory test pass.
